What is Aikido?

Aikido is a Japanese martial art. Aikido involves throws and joint locks that are practiced in a safe environment. Aikido places great emphasis on motion and the dynamics of movement.

Aikido is an applicable self-defense technique, as well as bringing physical health, peace of mind, and spiritual enlightenment. O’Sensei emphasized the moral and spiritual aspects of this art and the development of harmony and peace, and the idea of a martial art striving for peace and harmony is the most basic principle of Aikido.

Aikido is a Budo or “Martial Way”

Aikido practitioners train to integrate their body, mind, and spirit through practice of natural body movement (Tai Sabaki, Kokyo and Mai-Ai) principles and techniques.

There are no tournaments or competitions, and practice is conducted in a spirit of mutual respect between all practitioners.

In Aikido, we seek to protect the assailant while simultaneously neutralizing the will and ability to attack.
